How to Transport a Motorbike in a Van — Fast Guide

Transporting your motorbike safely doesn’t need to be complicated, Tips from The Van Men.

Why It Matters

  • Prevents scratches, dents, damage

  • Keeps you safer on the road

  • Helps with insurance, if you’ve documented things well

What You’ll Need

Item Purpose Van with ramp Makes loading/unloading easier and safer Wheel chock Holds the front wheel in place to stop side-to-side movement Ratchet or soft straps To secure front and rear of bike so it can’t shift Padding (blankets, foam, etc.) Protect delicate parts (mirrors, exhaust, plastics) Low, level ground To reduce risks when rolling the bike in or out

Steps to Load & Secure the Bike

  1. Park van on level ground & deploy ramp so slope isn’t too steep.

  2. Roll bike into the van slowly, with assistance if needed.

  3. Front wheel goes into the wheel chock. This stabilises it at the front.

  4. Use front straps (on each handlebar or forks) to pull the bike slightly inward.

  5. Strap the rear so the bike can't move forwards/backwards.

  6. Add padding around anything that might rub or hit metal.

  7. Give a gentle shake once strapped to test stability. If it moves, adjust.

Tips While Driving & When Unloading

  • Drive gently — avoid harsh braking, sharp turns.

  • Check strap tightness after a stop, especially if going over rough roads.

  • Unloading: remove rear straps first, then front, and reverse the loading steps carefully.

  • Always have someone help for safety.
