How to Pack Furniture for Safe Transport

When moving house, sending furniture to a customer, or arranging delivery across the UK or between Great Britain and Northern Ireland, packing your furniture properly is essential. Good preparation protects your items from damage, keeps them clean, and ensures they arrive in the same condition they left.

Here’s a simple guide to packing furniture the right way.

1. Prepare Your Furniture

Before you start packing, take a few minutes to prepare your items:

  • Clean all surfaces to remove dust and dirt

  • Empty drawers, cabinets, and compartments

  • Remove loose parts such as shelves, legs, and cushions

  • Check for any existing damage and make a note of it

Taking these steps makes your furniture lighter, easier to handle, and safer to transport.

2. Use the Right Packing Materials

Using proper materials makes a big difference when it comes to protecting your furniture.

We recommend:

  • Furniture blankets or moving pads

  • Bubble wrap for fragile areas

  • Shrink wrap or stretch film

  • Strong packing tape

  • Cardboard sheets or corner protectors

Avoid using bin bags or thin materials, as they don’t offer enough protection during transport.

3. Protect Vulnerable Areas

Corners, edges, and surfaces are the most likely parts to get damaged during transit.

Make sure to:

  • Wrap corners with cardboard or foam protectors

  • Cover glass, mirrors, and polished surfaces with bubble wrap

  • Use furniture blankets to cover the entire item

This extra protection helps prevent scratches, chips, and cracks.

4. Disassemble Where Possible

If your furniture can be taken apart, it’s always a good idea to do so.

Disassembling items such as beds, tables, and wardrobes:

  • Saves space in the van

  • Makes loading and unloading easier

  • Reduces the risk of damage

Keep all screws and fittings in labelled bags and secure them to the main item.

5. Wrap and Secure Everything

Once your furniture is prepared, wrap it properly.

  • Use blankets or bubble wrap to cover the entire piece

  • Secure with shrink wrap or strong tape so it doesn’t come loose

  • Add extra padding to any areas that stick out

A tightly wrapped item is much safer and easier to stack in a van.

6. Load Furniture Correctly

How furniture is loaded is just as important as how it’s packed.

Make sure:

  • Heavier items go at the bottom

  • Lighter or fragile items are placed on top

  • Items are secured to stop movement during transit

  • Nothing is stacked directly on delicate surfaces

A well-loaded van prevents shifting and keeps your furniture safe.

7. Consider Long-Distance Transport (UK ↔ NI)

If your furniture is travelling long distances—especially between Great Britain and Northern Ireland—it will spend more time on the road and on ferries.

For extra protection:

  • Use additional padding and wrapping

  • Protect against moisture with shrink wrap

  • Choose a reliable courier experienced in long-distance transport

This gives your items the best chance of arriving in perfect condition.
